Amaranth, also known as Purple Heart, is an exotic wood renowned for its stunning purple colour. When freshly cut, the wood has a brown to grayish-green hue, but after a few days exposed to air, it begins to oxidize and changes into a rich purple colour. Over time and with UV exposure, the colour may darken and shift to a deep brownish-purple shade, giving it an extraordinary appearance.

Amaranth originates from the tropical regions of Central and South America, particularly in Brazil, Guyana, and Colombia. Trees of this species can reach up to 50 meters in height, making them a significant source of hardwood for industrial use. It is among the hardest and most durable woods in the world. It is highly resistant to insect infestation and decay, making it an ideal material for outdoor use, such as ship decks, bridges, and outdoor furniture. Its hardness on the Janka scale is approximately 11,190 N, significantly higher than most commonly used woods.

Due to its hardness and aesthetic qualities, Purpleheart is popular among artisans, furniture makers, and fine woodworkers. It is used for making furniture, flooring, small decorative items, and musical instruments (especially guitar necks and fingerboards). Because of its remarkable color, it is often used as inlay in other wooden surfaces.
