Raw Amber
Amber is a fossilized resin of prehistoric trees from the Tertiary period. Age of the Baltic amber is estimated to be between 28 and 54 million years. Dominican amber is slightly younger - 15 to 20 million years. The surface of raw amber is formed of a layer of opaque bark, often covered with volcanic dust, especially in the case of Dominican amber. The bark of raw amber was formed by oxidation over millions of years. This outer layer covers the amber itself, which only reveals its beauty once it Is grind and polished. However, amber jewellery with the bark of the raw stone is also very popular, as it gives amber a darker shade of orange to brown colour.
Amber is a relatively soft amorphous "stone" that does not have a regular crystalline structure. Each piece is different. On the Mohs hardness scale, it ranges from 2 to 2.5. Amber is easy to work on a simple home grinder. When cut, it gives off a soft and fresh pine scent.
